MORE ABOUT MIKE

Mike Gronstal, from Council Bluffs, has been the Senate Democratic Leader since 1997. First elected to office in 1982, Gronstal served one term in the Iowa House (1983-85), and is currently in his seventh term in the Senate. He is the State Democratic Leader in the Iowa Senate and has been a lifelong advocate for public education and smart politics.

OUR ADVOCATE

We are fortunate to have Mike Gronstal represent us, our students, our schools and our profession. In the current political climate it is vital that you understand that we need YOU. Your time, your talent, and--eventually--your treasure will be needed to make sure that we reverse the trend of legislators who are willing to sell out our children for corporate tax cuts.

No Greater Advocate for Students and Public Education

Of all members of Iowa's General Assembly there is no greater advocate for students and public education then state Senator Mike Gronstal.

Whether Senator Gronstal has been a member of the Majority or Minority party in the Iowa Senate he has year in and year out led the way in successfully funding our public education institutions---the Area Education Agencies (AEA's), K-12 schools, Iowa's Community Colleges, and the Regents institutions.

As recent as the late 1980's, Iowa's teacher's salaries ranked as high as 26th in the nation. By the early 2000's our teacher salaries slipped to an all-time low of 42nd in the nation. Under Majority Leader Gronstal's leadership in the 2001 session, working with Governor Vilsack and colleagues in the Iowa House---Democrats made a promise to Iowa teachers to raise their salaries to the national average. In the 2005 session with Senator Gronstal leading the way---Democrats made their first investment in Iowa's educators, following again in the 2006 and 2007 session to keep their promise---acknowledging them for the great work they continue to do. Iowa's teachers on an average will have seen a $9,000 raise by the time they receive their paycheck in October 2008. Promises made, promises kept.
