OUR ADVOCATE

We are fortunate to have Mike Gronstal represent us, our students, our schools and our profession. In the current political climate it is vital that you understand that we need YOU. Your time, your talent, and--eventually--your treasure will be needed to make sure that we reverse the trend of legislators who are willing to sell out our children for corporate tax cuts.

New funding will improve offerings at Iowa Western

During the 2010 session, the Legislature set aside funding for renovations and repairs at Iowa’s 15 community colleges, including health, life and fire safety needs, and for compliance with the federal Americans with Disabilities Act. From this appropriation, Iowa Western Community College was awarded $116,711 for security camera equipment in two new facilities.

In the Legislature, we also approved $5.5 million for Accelerated Career Education, which allows community colleges to partner with local businesses to provide vocational programs and accelerated training for employees.

Each community college received $366,666 for an approved ACE training program. Iowa Western Community College is using its ACE award for the Dental Hygiene program. It prepares students to become preventive health professionals who provide educational and clinical services in oral health. The rigorous science-oriented curriculum applies principles from social sciences and biomedical areas. Graduates of this program are awarded an Associate of Applied Science degree.

To be approved for ACE funding, a training program must meet several requirements, such as training more students and helping them develop the worker skills that lead to good-paying jobs
