CONTINUING PROGRESS ON JOB CREATION AND OTHER IOWA PRIORITIES
Voters clearly voiced their discontent with the lingering national recession. That’s the message I’ll be taking to the Iowa Statehouse when I return for the 2011 legislative session.
Too many Iowans are still out of work, which means we must stay focused on creating good jobs. I’m ready to work with Governor-elect Branstad and legislators from across the state to ensure that happens.

When the 2011 session convenes on January 10, I have three main goals:
1. Expanding the foundation of Iowa’s economic recovery. Iowans want real economic growth and good jobs that that can’t be outsourced.
2. Continuing to streamline state government. That means following through on the state government reforms and reorganization we began last year.
3. Balancing the state budget without raising taxes.
At the same time, I will not give up on the excellent quality of life that makes Iowa a great place to live, work, invest and raise a family.
Iowans want us to protect the progress we’ve made on health care, improving in local schools, and helping struggling families help themselves.
These goals are all within reach because Iowa’s economy and state budget are in better shape than most states due to the fiscal responsibility and smart investments of recent years.
After the historic flooding, we’re rebuilding Iowa in a smarter, stronger way.
We’re investing in job-creation incentives to help grow our Main Street businesses, not Wall Street.
We’re expanding on our success in making Iowa the nation’s leader in children’s health care by addressing the needs of families and small businesses.
We’re building our wind industry and biofuels production facilities because these jobs can’t be shipped overseas.
We’re making high-quality educational opportunity—from preschool through college and job training—more accessible so that students young and old are prepared for the jobs of tomorrow.
And we’re reorganizing state government so that it runs more efficiently and puts taxpayer dollars to work wisely.
Going forward, I’ll protect the gains we’ve made and work with Democrats and Republicans to continue building a strong Iowa future.
