Crime declined in Iowa in 2009, according to a new report from the Iowa Department of Public Safety.
The Uniform Criminal Report shows that the total number of crimes declined 2.4 percent from 2008 to 2009. Crimes against people (including sexual assaults) decreased 1.3 percent.
Through our work in the Legislature, we’ll continue this positive trend by listening to Iowans and working with our law enforcement professionals who are on the front lines every day. To read the full Uniform Criminal Report, go to www.dps.state.ia.us/commis/ucr/.

One of my top priorities as your state senator is ensuring our local communities remain safe, welcoming places to live, work and raise a family. And I’m proud of the long and varied list of accomplishments we’ve made in the Legislature to better ensure that safety.
A few of the measures we’ve approved in the last couple years include:
** Standing up for the 2nd Amendment rights of responsible gun owners and improving public safety by passing uniform standards for gun permits. Iowa’s “shall issue” law was endorsed by the National Rifle Association.
Safe, close-knit communities help make Iowa a wonderful place to live and raise a family.
I am committed to making Iowa smarter and tougher on crime. Recent accomplishments include cracking down on sex offenders, banning texting while driving, preventing domestic violence murders, and supporting our first responders who put their lives on the line for our safety.
Concerned Iowans and public safety professionals in our communities brought these ideas to me, and I listened. Their input has helped us pass bipartisan legislation that is smarter and tougher on crime so that all Iowans are safer and more secure.
